Today, as a tribute to Magdalena "Nana Daleng" Gamayo's upcoming 100th birthday, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) held a ceremonial marking of her inabel fabric at the Map of Philippine Weave located at the Institute's TELA Gallery.
The ceremonial mark was graced by no less than the DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr., who showed his support to boost the Philippine textile industry through science, technology, and innovation. The event was also attended by DOST-PTRI Director Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr., Katutubo Exchange Philippines Founder Dr. Edwin Antonio, and the GAMABA Weaving Cultural Center weavers and student-trainees of SAGUT 100.
Displayed in the Ilocos Norte region, the inabel weave is called the "Inubon a sabong" or string of flowers, designed by Nana Daleng.
Gamayo received the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan award in 2012 for her excellent contribution to the country's cultural heritage as a master textile weaver. The Institute honors her creations and contributions to the Philippine textile industry, especially in training the young generation of weavers in Ilocos Norte.
