INAUGURATION OF THE REGIONAL YARN PRODUCTION AND INNOVATION CENTER IN ILOILO
As a realization of its TELA Pilipinas advocacy or known as Textiles Empowering Lives Anew advocacy, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) spearheads the inauguration of the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center in Miagao, Iloilo (RYPIC).
The RYPIC is a project under the DOST Inclusive Innovation TELA or i2TELA Program. It is the first microscale yarn spinning facility which aims to produce crafted yarns from blends of natural textile fibers, abaca, banana and pineapple leaf, in combination with cotton at a 50 kilograms of yarns per day capacity.The RYPIC aims to jumpstart local ecosystems for the textile sector and will cater to the requirements of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)in the fashion industry, academe and government institutions for yarns and fabrics using local raw materials, skills, and talents.

January of every year is declared as the Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Month and this year, it carried the theme: “TELA (Textiles Empowering Lives Anew): Gawang Pilipinas. Galing Pilipinas”. Spearheaded by the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), the textile research arm of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), one of the highlights of the month-long celebration was the conduct of “A TELA Story, Philippine Tropical Fabrics: Rising to the Challenge”, the Textile Stakeholders Conference held at the Philippine International Convention Center.The Textile Stakeholders Conference focused on the current state of PTF, from its production, utilization, and challenges. It brought together notable guests and enthusiasts from various sectors.

PTRI Promotes Sustainable Development in 2019 NSTW

This year’s National Science and Technology Week (NSTW)—a much-anticipated annual event focused on the exhibition of up-to-date innovations in science and technology in the Philippines— is happening from July 17 to 21, 2019 at the World Trade Center. The five-day activity will be centered to the theme: "Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development”. This will become the perfect venue for the Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST - PTRI) to bring forward its latest sustainable and purposeful textile-related technologies, services, and initiatives towards attaining sustainable development.
