Soldiers’ uniforms have improved since the Philippine Textile Research Institute’s (PTRI) quality assurance testing intervention, according to the Research and Development Center (RDC) of the Philippine Army Support Command.
Col. Victor V. Bayani, commanding officer of RDC, shared that PTRI’s technical assistance in quality testing of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’s (AFP) individual clothing and individual equipment (ICIE) has helped ensure quality standard. He said subscribing to PTRI’s textile quality testing has standardized the color and shade of AFP’s battle
dress attire. Color and shade disparity in battle dress attire had been a perennial problem of the AFP until
PTRI offered its testing services.

Col. Bayani was also thankful to PTRI for addressing issues on the different properties of textiles such as
shrinkage of battle dress attire experienced by AFP personnel deployed overseas.

A line agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), PTRI has also contributed to enhancing the skills of RDC staff in textile development and analysis.
The introductory course on fabric evaluation enabled our technical personnel to gain insights on the
identity of fibers, its composition, and factors that affect its colorfastness,” Col. Bayani stated before
participants of a forum aimed at engaging industry partners in business opportunities organized by DOST. The forum was one of the highlights of DOST’s 21st Annual Science and Technology Fair, which kicked off on July 19 at the Manila Hotel.

“PTRI-DOST has been and will always be indispensable partner of RDC and the
entire AFP in pursuit of improving the quality of items being used by soldiers
especially those in the field. I am very optimistic that with the bond we have
established, which has further solidified through the years, our mission in quality
assurance will continuously be achieved,” Col. Bayani concluded. (Arlene R.
