The Sustainable Fabric Behind Carlos Yulo's Show-Stopping Look
Fashion is more than just style—it tells a story of heritage, innovation, and national pride. At the Gintong Sinag: Hinabi ng Lakas, Ginawa nang may Pagmamalaki fundraising fashion show on March 25, 2025, world-class gymnast Carlos Yulo took his final walk in a show-stopping outfit that honored the beauty and innovativeness of Philippine textiles.
Designed by Avel Bacudio in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), Yulo’s outfit was a fusion of tradition and technology. Crafted from Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) made with cotton-pineapple blended yarns developed by DOST-PTRI, and featuring an intricate Yakan weave from Basilan, the garment highlighted resilience, sustainability, and the artistry of Filipino weavers.

The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) participates in the Women in Science and Innovation Exhibition during the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UN CSTD) in Geneva, Switzerland. Representing the Institute is Ms. Kimberly Viron, Project Leader and Science Research Specialist II, who presents the research and development on Philippine natural dyes and eco-textile finishing.
