DOST-PTRI Assesses Abaca-Based Weaving Communities in Legazpi City

To bolster the handloom weaving industry in Albay, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) has partnered with the Provincial Science and Technology Office - Albay to conduct a Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) for abaca-based weaving communities. The assessment took place at the Banquerohan Resettlement Site in Legazpi City, where residents have turned to weaving as a source of livelihood after being displaced by the hazards of Mayon Volcano in Daraga.

The Philippine textile industry takes a major step toward inclusivity as the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) collaborates with P.E.P. Center Foundation, Inc. (Personalized Education Program with SPED Inclusion) to provide life skills training and economic opportunities for Persons with Special Needs in Legazpi City, Albay on November 7, 2024. As part of this collaboration, DOST-PTRI officially turned over five (5) Therapeutic Handloom Weaving Machines version 2 (TheraLoom V2) to the P.E.P. Center, laying the foundation for an inclusive weaving center in the province.

Organized by the Lao Handicraft Association (LHA), this symposium celebrated the cultural heritage and traditional textile practices of the ASEAN region.

DOST-PTRI Hands Over Silk Handloom Machines to Empower Villanueva Women

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, Department of Tourism Region 10, and STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI), has initiated a livelihood program for the women of the Villanueva Kini General Services Multi-Purpose Cooperative (VKMPC). As part of SPI’s Livelihood and Enterprise Development Program, two sets of silk hand-loom weaving machines were formally turned over to VKMPC, aiming to establish a thriving silk industry in Villanueva.
