Launching of the Silk Innovation Center in Kalinga
The commitment to continuously develop local and natural textile fibers of the Department of Science and Technology, through its textile research arm, the Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) found fresh expression with the launch of the Silk Innovation Center in Kalinga, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). To grow the silk production activities in the Cordilleras, the Silk Innovation Center was launched on April 29, 2022 at the Kalinga State University (KSU) Rizal Campus with the 10-hectare KSU property earmarked for mulberry propagation.

DOST Partners with Key Stakeholders for an Inclusive Innovation TELA Program in Northern Luzon

The Department of Science and Technology through its Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) has recently spearheaded the official signing of the memorandum of agreement for the Inclusive Innovation (i2) TELA program at the Isabela Convention Center in the City of Cauayan. The Institute is partnering with the academe, local government units, and DOST regional offices to successfully establish three (3) natural textile facilities.

DOST BUILDS FOUR NEW R&D FACILITIES TO SUPPORT THE LOCAL NATURAL TEXTILE FIBER PROCESSING

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) strengthens the local natural fiber processing research and development capacity by building four (4) various R&D facilities inside the DOST compound in Bicutan, Taguig City.
A groundbreaking ceremony was conducted on April 4, 2022 to introduce the four (4) DOST-PTRI strategic facilities, namely the Nonwoven Textile Innovation Facility, Natural Textile Fiber Pretreatment Innovation Facility, Regenerated Cellulose Material Innovation Facility, and Textile Biopolymer Innovation Facility. This expansion will complement the ongoing initiative to weave together DOST-PTRI's competence in natural fiber science and engineering for textiles and allied application.

Bananas, aside from their fruit, have many uses and benefits. Unknown to many, banana textile fibers can be extracted from their pseudostem and can be utilized for different textile applications. Applications can be for wearables, home furnishings, biomedical and industrial components.
