Building partnerships with Textile Producers and Fabric Suppliers for Philippine Tropical Fabrics

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute organized an Innovation Dialogue with Textile and Garment Producers. The gathering aims to tackle the provisions of the Amended Implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 9242, the Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Law. It involved the presentation and discussion of the PTF Certification Protocol and Guidelines of the Institute. Further, the concerns and needs of Textile Producers and Fabric Suppliers were put to the table giving an avenue to propose possible actions to be taken.

DOST-PTRI to partner with Redeyes Footwear Solutions and Fashion Purveyor for Sustainable Footwear

In celebration of the 2024 Philippine Tropical Fabrics Month and for the DOST-PTRI to further push towards their goal of establishing linkages and policies using local textiles, the institute signed a Memorandum of Agreement with both Redeyes Footwear Solutions and Fashion Purveyor, more popularly known as Roweliza Shoes and Bags Manufacturing, at the TELA Gallery on January 11, 2024. This leads PTRI to further explore the possibilities of sustainable footwear molded for Filipinos.
On one hand, Fashion Purveyor, along with the SAFATOS Program, aims to research and develop sustainable footwear using Philippine Tropical Fabrics made of cotton, banana, and bamboo sourced, woven, and processed by local makers.

DOST-PTRI leads the First Quarterly National Footwear Technical Working Group (NFTWG) Meeting

As part of the celebration of 2024 Philippine Tropical Fabrics Month, the first quarterly National Footwear Technical Working Group (NFTWG) meeting was held on January 11, 2024, at the TELA Gallery of the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) with the goal of establishing linkages and policies using local textiles. Various stakeholders in the footwear industry attended and discussed the current state of the Philippine Footwear Industry.
The first highlight of the event focused on the accomplishments and performance of the NFTWG during the previous year. The next steps towards achieving the goals set in the Roadmap for the Philippine Footwear Industry were also discussed. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) opened the floor for recommendations and considerations that can be employed to further valorize the Philippine Footwear Industry.

Every January, the nation celebrates Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Month through Proclamation No. 313 Series of 2012. This annual observance is a testament to the country's commitment to promoting natural textiles, advancing local industries, and creating livelihood opportunities.

At the heart of this celebration lies a wide spectrum of natural fibers sourced within the country. From pineapple leaves to abaca, banana, bamboo, and the Philippine Silk, these materials encapsulate the essence of the Philippines' rich biodiversity. What sets PTF apart is not just the sourcing of raw materials but also the commitment to processing and sustaining these fibers entirely within the country.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), under its attached agency, the Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), takes the helm each year, orchestrating activities engaging stakeholders from various sectors. These initiatives, in line with Republic Act 9242, encourage the incorporation of PTF into the uniforms of public officials and employees, demonstrating a concerted effort to drive local utilization.
Under the theme "Spinning Innovations," this year's celebration signifies a commitment to integrating small strides into impactful solutions, fostering collaborations, and encouraging conversations. Building upon the momentum of the previous year's theme, "Pushing Boundaries," "Spinning Innovations" emphasizes science, technology, and innovation to reshape the textile industry sustainably.

DOST-PTRI Organizes the 2nd Interagency Technical Working Group on Handloom Weaving Meeting

As part of the 2024 Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Month, the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute conducted the 2nd Interagency Technical Working Group on Handloom Weaving Meeting on January 8, 2024, at the DOST-PTRI TELA Gallery. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry Region 3, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, DA-Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines - Policy Research and International Affairs, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines - Bureau of Trademarks, and the Office of Senator Loren Legarda.
The DOST recognizes the crucial role of the Handloom Weaving Industry in sustaining regional creative textiles through the promotion of PTF-based weaves. DOST-PTRI acknowledges the challenges outlined in Senate Bill (SB) 241, also known as "An Act Providing for the Development and Protection of the Philippine Handloom Weaving Industry." Consequently, an Inter-Agency Meeting was convened, bringing together the Handloom Weaving Technical Working Group. This group comprises representatives from NCCA, NCIP, DTI, TESDA, IPOPHL, and DA-PhilFIDA, with special participation from the Office of Senator Loren Legarda. The purpose was to discuss initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainability and protection of the sector.
The meeting focused on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between co-implementing agencies, aiming to address the challenges faced by the handloom weaving industry.
